About Hope of the Pokomchi (ASOSAP)

Our Purpose

Motivated by Christ's love, we serve the Pokomchí people of Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, helping them move towards their God-given potential.

This goal is achieved by:

  • Establishing and building relationships of love and trust with needy communities
  • Providing people, ideas, and resources through education and appropriate technology
  • Coming alongside the people in these communities as they work toward their vision for an improved life - mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually

Our Commitments

  • Help communities take ownership of their own challenges and work toward sustainable solutions
  • Incorporate in all interactions with the communities, the relevance and importance of Biblical principles applied to their daily lives
  • Use funds effectively and be accountable to each partner
  • Respond rapidly and appropriately to urgent needs
  • Focus on helping the most isolated and abandoned communities
  • Mentor our young Pokomchí staff, equipping them with technical and leadership skills

Our Work

Along with community and local church leaders, we:
  • Identify needs and create solutions
  • Identify the resources - financial, material, and human - that the community can contribute to achieving solutions
  • Promote the Gospel through Bible lessons and show Christ’s love through our actions as God provides opportunities
  • Facilitate the empowerment of women through the formation and training of women's groups
  • Establish improved health through:
  • Health education
  • Agriculture and animal husbandry
  • Rural Health Post
  • Clean, accessible water
  • Sanitation
  • Wood-burning Cook Stoves
In coordination with International Groups
  • Establish five-year partnerships between needy Pokomchí villages and International Groups
  • Promote the gospel through dramas, worship, and culturally appropriate Bible games, crafts, and stories
  • Receive short-term teams of up to fifteen people (referred to as “Hope Go Teams”*) who work in communities, alongside the Pokomchí, building projects and realizing activities with children
  • Encourage mutual love, respect, and inter-cultural awareness between the two groups
  • Educate International Groups about poverty and the Pokomchí culture
  • Implement an internship program for young Internationals who sense a call to cross-cultural missions
  • Facilitate the contribution of funds and technical expertise to complete projects

* “Hope Go Teams is our name for “God Ordained Teams” – indicating we strive to do all, in the center of God’s will, encouraging hope in those we work along side

In Response to International Interested Parties
  • Offer Hope Vision trips twice per year; this presents and ideal opportunity for those who wish to have a first-hand overview of the ministry for a period of 3-5 days. The trips are usually scheduled for spring and fall and are led by Bill and Linda Brierly, the organization’s founders.
