Scholarships for Young People of Isolated Rural Villages

Public education for Pokomchi children ends at 6th grade.  They are limited by access to educational facilities and the financial impact “higher” education has on the family.   Hope of the Pokomchi has created a scholarship program for Pokomchi youth who have the ability drive to continue their education into Basico (middle school).

Middle School Scholarship Quickfacts:
  • Three year program for middle school grades
  • Eighteen students from 6 remote communities participated; 10 graduated
  • They traveled to town on weekends, lived in a student house, and returned to their communities during the week
  • In addition to their scholastic studies, they received Bible teaching and attended a youth church service every weekend
  • Participated in extracurricular sports activities
  • Had their own student government
  • Were mentored by a Christian Pokomchi “house mother”

Success Stories

Of the ten students who graduated from this program, 3 of them are now in career studies through scholarships – one in a 3-year program of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and 2 in an 18-month program of Rural Auxiliary Nursing.

Four more of these graduates desire to study a career but no funds are available at this time.
