Why Give?

You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.

2 Corinthians 9:11

The way we respond to our financial blessings says a lot about whether we are living out our thanks to God. Control of our wallets is often the center of our most deep-seated resistance to God.

God gives us every good and perfect gift. When He chooses to bless us with financial treasures, He gives them to us to use for others, to bless them and to further the work of building up His kingdom. We are not the wealth owners, just the wealth managers.

How we manage God’s wealth is a barometer of our faith. How we manage our giving reflects what we truly believe. We often manage and give as though our resources were meager and God was poor, or as though God has been stingy toward us.

But God gives us our daily bread daily. He gives us what we need, even when this is different from what we might want. He provides for us, just as He provides for all His creatures. He even gave us His only Son!

We can never give more than God, just as we can never forgive more or love more than He does. Yet, in faithful “thanks living”, we give joyfully and generously when God puts His work or someone’s need in our path.

Lord, let me always be a cheerful giver. Amen.
